ECE on the Hill Day – January 17, 2019
We had a productive day on the Hill-January 17, 2019. Statewide educational agencies and nonprofits were band together with one resounding message “Support the Workforce behind the Workforce”. A public-private collaboration between businesses and the education community could be seen on the boards of Early Childhood Iowa, the Iowa Women’s Foundation, and in Governor Reynold’s spear-headed initiative “Future Ready Iowa – Iowa Employer Innovation Fund”. By having a more aligned message, the funding can be powered behind one mega initiative to support 0-5 education/child care, businesses and working citizens throughout our state.
Trepson has been centered on equity in educational opportunities that include the middle-income group, which receives far less support than the high and low income groups; so the message to support the workforce behind the workforce is in line with our focus.

Drishti Dance School & Fitness will be supporting our students at Trepson Montessori Preschool in “fun and focus” through movement, yoga, and dance starting Fall 2018. The foundation of learning in the sensitive periods, ages 0-6, is focus. Christina Allen, owner of Drishti Dance School & Fitness, is in line with our practices. We welcome Christina Allen to our school as she adds another specialized way that we get children ready for kindergarten (See How Does Your Child Approach Preschool Benchmarks to Be Ready for Kindergarten and Life?).
BVCS Early Childhood Iowa Scholarship applications for Trepson are due today to our program (See BVCS Early Childhood Scholarships for Middle Income Families). We have reached our limit on 3 year old enrollment for the morning program. Fall enrollment will close August 31, 2018.

How Does Your Child Approach Infant/Toddler or Preschool Benchmarks to Be Ready for Kindergarten?

Free play and fun is essential to every early childhood program. Our enjoy free play as well as their independence in progressive learning.
The Iowa Early Learning Standards, 3rd edition published on July 17, 2018 guides observant teachers to adequately assist infants through preschool age children in school and life readiness, “Adults pay close attention to each child’s individual and social needs, and then adjust situations so that each child is successful in his or her own way. These practices serve as the foundation for the Iowa Early Learning Standards” (Iowa Early Learning Standards, pg. 14; https://educateiowa.gov/sites/files/ed/documents/IowaEarlyLearningStandards-3rdEdition.pdf). , President David Arens of Early Childhood Iowa State Board and President Brooke Axiotis of Iowa State Board of Education wrote, “these standards [Iowa Early Learning Standards, 3rd edition] are aligned with the Iowa CORE standards for the end of kindergarten to support the transition from early childhood into preschool – grade 12 education.” At Trepson Montessori Preschool, we utilize the Iowa Early Learning Standards; and we send written observations and photos/videos to parents daily about their children’s development. In our semester term teacher-parent conferences, we have an opportunity to discuss how children are progressing towards school readiness and to be a successful-balanced person in society.
Missed opportunities to help children before age 3 make it more challenging for children to break habits or capitalize on learning, but programs with experienced and qualified teachers can still work with families to make a powerful impact that will matter in your child’s life. In the Montessori method, we know the first major opportunity to make substantial life habits is between ages 0-3 and the secondary sensitive period is when children are between 3 and 6 years old. That is why starting early in useful approaches to learning is essential.
As Trepson grows, nurturing children to form life habits and capitalize on learning will always be one of our main priorities regardless of the curriculum or method we use for a program. Our parents are our partners for every child’s progressive success.

The Montessori researched method is used for children 2-6 years of age. This means the environment is set-up to attract each child’s internal motivation to learn and that each child progresses on his/her on plan. Toddler/Preschool Program Hours PM (Ages 18 months – 3 years):
2 – 5:30 pm Days Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Children may in enroll in a program for 2-4 days. The director will arrange a schedule with the family. However, not all days nor times may be available.

Preschool Scholarship Program – State Funded

On June 28, parents and community leaders addressed the Buena Vista, Crawford, Sac Counties Iowa Early Childhood board supporting Trepson Montessori Preschool. We were successful in being approved to participate in their Preschool Scholarship Program! This program gives scholarships for low and middle income parents that have children ages 3-5 enrolled with Trepson Montessori Preschool. We are the first Registered Child Development Home to ever be approved to participate in this program and the funds come from a State of Iowa Early Childhood Initiative allotment. We could not have achieved more resources for families without our parents and community support. Scholarship applications need to be submitted by July 26, 2018.
